Exploring the Cuisine of Marrakech

The Arrival

My friend Malou picked me up at the Frankfurt airport.  I had called her immediately after the election results and she said I was welcome to come stay in her family home in southern Germany.   I knew nothing about where I was going.  Literally no expectations or dreams of this place.  But after hanging up the phone with her, I knew I was going.  Everything had lined up perfectly.  And I mean, to the last detail.  And so I purchased a ticket to Frankfurt.  Here we go!

We left the airport for the 2 hour drive south.  It was February, so winter had not quite lifted.  The trees were bare.  The cold, quickly built, post-war buildings did not prepare me for the beauty that existed once spring arrived.

My friend Sherry met me a few days after I arrived to explore a few popular cities.  Heidelberg and Baden Baden.  We had a lovely time exploring, learning the train “system”, visiting castles and spas.

Weinsberg: The Women Carried Down the Men

After a few days with Sherry, I returned to Weinsberg to settle in for my allowed time in the Shengen part of Europe.  3 months to be exact.  After traveling most of the last 9 months in the US, it felt good to be settled in one place for 3 months.

Weinsberg is just what it sounds like- a small village surrounded by hills of vineyards.  So. Many. Vineyards.  The day I arrived, we went for a walk with Pazu, the dog.  Walks around here are through vineyards.  I watched them grow their leaves over the 3 months from the end of winter into spring.  Through the vineyards we walked up one hill.  In the distance, you could see a small castle on a hill.  The story of this castle during the war was that all the towns people walked up the hill for a meeting.  After the meeting the men were told to stay and the women were told they would leave and they could take only what they could carry.  And so the women carried their husbands down on their shoulders.

A Taste of the Local Cuisine

Our journey wouldn’t be complete without immersing ourselves in the local cuisine. From traditional street food to gourmet dining experiences, the city’s culinary scene is as diverse as it is delicious. Each meal is a celebration of the city’s culture, a blend of flavors that tells a story of its history and people.

The People: The Heart of the Destination

But the true heart of any destination lies in its people. Throughout our journey, we’ve had the privilege of meeting local artisans, passionate conservationists, and friendly locals who have shared their stories and welcomed us into their community. Their warmth and hospitality remind us that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about forming genuine connections along the way.

Reflections on the Journey

As our journey comes to an end, we’re left with more than just memories. We’ve gained a deeper understanding of the world, a greater appreciation for its diversity, and a renewed sense of wonder. And so, we head home, our hearts filled with stories to tell and a longing for our next adventure.
